Pompom beach8/16/2023 ![]() i thought they are missing out on the variety that this world has to offer. Many eye catchers.įor decades I was wondering why other tourists return to the same place on their vacation year after year. If you are an early bird and love photography, Popham Beach has a lot to offer. One day it was purple, one day it was golden, on another day it was flaming pink, one day it was deep blue. The sky and clouds had a different color on each single morning. The weather was perfect, we had 5 wonderful morning skies around 6:15 a.m. Our beach cottage was on the opposite side of a peninsula and near the Kennebec River mouth, so there were small boats to watch every once in a while. Two of them have light houses (Pond Island and Seguin Island), others have one house. The special thing about Popham Beach (particularly about our part near Fort Popham) is that there's more for your eyes to see than just the endless ocean. There are not many people walking and even in the pandemic we felt safe at all times. The good thing about visiting Popham Beach in October: you can see horses and dogs on the beach, but overall you have the beach for yourself. In August 2005 I spent one night at the building near Fort Popham which serves now as the Life Guard Station. Since I had read Douglas Kennedy's master piece "Pursuit of Happiness" some 20 years ago in which he describes Popham Beach State Park in an irresistible way, I wanted to explore it. We rented a beach cottage at the other end of Popham Beach from 10/2/21 until 10/9/21 (near Fort Popham), but visited Popham Beach State Park twice in the afternoon at low tide. Full disclosure: there was a shark warning sign and a blood control kit. Even had a sunscreen dispenser and an L.L.Bean pin pad operated storage container with games and other beach supplies to be borrowed on the honor system. Two large clean bathrooms, shower facilities, foot washing stations, etc. ![]() One of the best Maine state parks we visited. We were lucky enough to see 3 of them (an adult feeding 2 young). Make sure to stay out of roped off areas as they are nesting spots for an endangered species of bird. ![]() The fluxuating tide created shallow channels and pools the kids enjoyed splashing and running in. Some areas were more dangerous than others, so we did take their hands at spots (large cliffs dropping into the ocean). Our children (ages 5 and 7) enjoyed climbing on the rocks. Specifically planned our visit so that we would get there a little before low tide in order to walk on the sand bar out to Fox Island. Being from PA, we are not used to paying an entrance fee to get into state parks, but this stop was worth it.
